OC winterization — what it is and isn't
- Not needed: antifreeze in lines, blowing out plumbing, mesh safety covers for months — that's cold-climate winterization. Our winters don't justify it.
- Needed: reduced pump schedules, lighter chemical dosing, continued skimming (leaves peak in late fall), and freeze-night equipment protection.
- The goal: a pool that idles cleanly through winter and wakes up in March without a $500 spring cleanup.
The winter operating schedule
- Filtration: drop to 4–6 hours daily (vs. 8–12 in summer). Variable-speed pumps on low: minimal energy, adequate turnover.
- Chlorine: cooler water and weaker sun mean far less burn-off — dose lighter, test every week or two instead of weekly.
- Skimming: keep it up — late-fall leaf drop is the heaviest debris season. A leaf-choked skimmer starves the pump.
- Filter: check pressure monthly; deep-clean in late winter so spring starts with a clean filter.
Freeze nights: the 3-night drill
- Fullerton gets a handful of near-freezing nights most winters — enough to burst exposed pipes, not enough to justify full winterization.
- Run the pump during freezing hours. Moving water doesn't freeze in our brief dips — this single step prevents nearly all freeze damage.
- Cover exposed equipment or enable the pump's freeze-protection mode if it has one.
- Drain and store detachable bits: cleaner hoses, thermometers, anything that holds water above ground.
Weekly vs. biweekly in winter
Screened or light-use pools: biweekly November–February is legitimate — cooler water slows everything down. Unscreened pools under trees: stay weekly; leaf load doesn't care about the calendar. Skipping winter entirely is how $500 spring cleanups happen — see the weekly vs. biweekly math. When March highs hold in the 70s: ramp filtration back up, rebalance everything, deep-clean the filter, inspect equipment. Spring startup done right prevents the May algae bloom.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to winterize my pool in Orange County?
Not the full winterization cold climates need — no antifreeze, no line-blowing, no mesh safety covers for months. OC winter pool care is 'reduced operations': shorter pump runs, lighter chemical dosing, continued skimming, and equipment protection during the few freezing nights. The pool stays open; the workload drops.
Should I run the pump less in winter?
Yes — cooler water needs less filtration and less chlorine. Most OC pools drop to 4–6 hours of daily filtration in winter vs. 8–12 in summer. A variable-speed pump on a winter schedule is the cheapest way to run a pool: low speed, fewer hours, minimal energy.
What about freezing nights?
Fullerton sees a handful of near-freezing nights most winters. The protection is simple: run the pump during freezing hours (moving water doesn't freeze in our climate's brief dips), and cover exposed equipment or use the pump's freeze-protection mode if it has one. One burst pipe costs more than a winter of precaution.
Do I still need weekly service in winter?
The pool still needs attention — leaves fall heaviest in late fall, chemistry still drifts (slower), and neglected winter pools go green by spring. Many owners drop to biweekly November–February for screened or light-use pools; unscreened pools under trees usually stay weekly. Skipping winter entirely is how $500 spring cleanups happen.
When do I switch back to summer operations?
When daytime highs hold in the 70s — usually March/April in Fullerton. Ramp filtration hours back up, test and rebalance everything (CYA, calcium, salt cell if applicable), deep-clean the filter, and inspect equipment before the heavy season. Spring startup done right prevents the May algae bloom.
